Overview of Location
Embark on a 4-day, 3-night journey through Sabah's natural and cultural treasures. Begin with intimate encounters with orangutans at the Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre and sun bears at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. Experience the rich biodiversity of the Kinabatangan River during river cruises and jungle treks, offering opportunities to observe endemic wildlife. Explore the Gomantong Caves, renowned for their impressive limestone formations and swiftlet nests. This itinerary provides a comprehensive immersion into Sabah's unique ecosystems and heritage.
Sample Itinerary
Day 1: Sandakan / Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre / Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre / Bilit Rainforest Lodge / Kinabatangan River Cruise
- Pick-up from your hotel or Sandakan Airport and visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre for a briefing, a short documentary, and a chance to observe orangutans in their natural habitat. Walk the rainforest boardwalk to the feeding platform.
- Continue to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre to learn about the world’s smallest bears with their unique chest markings.
- Travel two hours through countryside villages to Bilit Jetty and take a boat ride to Bilit Rainforest Lodge. Check in, enjoy lunch, and relax.
- In the evening, cruise along the Kinabatangan River to spot wildlife such as proboscis monkeys and pygmy elephants. After dinner, join an optional night safari cruise to discover nocturnal animals and crocodiles.
Day 2: Morning Cruise or Jungle Trek
- Choose between an early morning river cruise along the Kinabatangan River to spot wildlife or a jungle trek to Oxbow Lake for birdwatching.
- Return to the lodge for breakfast and enjoy free time until lunch. Optional guided jungle walks are available at an extra fee.
- In the afternoon, embark on another river cruise along the Kinabatangan River for more wildlife sightings, including herds of pygmy elephants. Enjoy dinner and spend another night in the rainforest.
Day 3: Gomantong Cave / Sandakan City Hotel
- After breakfast, visit the Gomantong Caves, home to millions of bats and swiftlets. Learn about bird nest harvesting and explore the impressive limestone formations.
- Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before transferring to Sabah Hotel (or similar) in Sandakan for leisure time or optional add-on tours.
Day 4: Sandakan Airport or Hotel
- Breakfast will be served at the hotel. After breakfast, check out and transfer to your hotel or Sandakan Airport.
